My family and I live in Fresno, CA. Hold on, now before you start tearing Fresno apart, I will say the best part about living in Fresno is the vicinity to a number of vacation destinations!
It’s just a two or three hour drive to a variety of California beaches, an hour to the Sierra mountains, two hours to Yosemite, three hours to either San Francisco or Los Angeles, and just four hours from Lake Tahoe, where we dream of one day owning a vacation home so the entire family can have an awesome place to visit anytime of the year.
When my wife was younger, that’s what her whole family did. They would rent a cabin at Lake Tahoe for a week and gather to hang out in the summer. Now the summer would be great, but I love winter. I grew up in the hills of West Virginia, so I want my kids (and my new Alusky pup) to visit the snow as much as I did growing up. There’s nothing better than waking up to a winter wonderland, and spending the day in a snow covered mountains.
Of course we’re miles away from owning a vacation home, but I did get to researching and found a really great Winter Vacation Report that was done by Vacasa, about the Top 10 places to buy winter vacation homes and found that North Lake Tahoe was number 10.
I mean, I’m kinda not surprised. It’s friggin, Lake Tahoe…have you been there? It’s beyond magical.
It was cool to see other spots on their list as well that I had never thought of like, Big Bear Lake, CA. which wouldn’t be a bad winter destination either.

All in all, Vacasa did get me thinking about the future of owning a vacation rental. I mean, if I purchased one, then I could have Vacasa (as they are a property management company) manage the property and I could make money on it, while being able to use it for myself when I want to do so. We have a friend who owns four vacation properties, she loves it and that’s her yearly income…so perhaps the future can be a little closer than we think.
